Vitreous haemorrhage presents as a sudden drop in vision, sometimes with a shower of red dots or a dark veil. Blood accumulates in the vitreous cavity, blocking the light reaching the retina.
Emergency: identifying the underlying cause
Vitreous haemorrhage can mask a retinal tear or retinal detachment, proliferative diabetic retinopathy or venous occlusion. An emergency ultrasound is performed when the fundus is not visible. Do not delay seeking consultation.
