A retinal tear is a break in the retina that can progress to detachment if not rapidly treated with laser. It often presents with flashes of light and a sudden shower of floaters.
Urgent laser treatment
Laser photocoagulation seals the tear by creating a scar barrier around it. It is performed in clinic, without hospitalisation, and prevents progression to retinal detachment in the vast majority of cases. Any suspected retinal tear requires urgent fundus examination.
